PTA Sponsored Educational Enrichment Programs
All Grade Level Assemblies
The P.S. 221 PTA sponsors various assemblies and programs each year. The 2019-2020 School Year will feature some exciting school wide assemblies!
Each year the PTA sponsor age appropriate events for our youngest learners. Our tiniest students enjoy visits from Alley Pond Environmental Center, cooking and baking with Baking Chefs, they take walking trips to the Marathon Playhouse and get their hands plenty dirty with interactive art classes.
3rd Grade Recorder Program
The PTA sponsors the recorder program for the 3rd grade classes. Music makes a contribution to kids’ development that no other subject can match. It uniquely contributes to the emotional, physical, social and cognitive growth of all students and the P.S. 221 PTA is more than happy to provide this invaluable program to our current 3rd grade students!
Native American Program
The P.S. 221 PTA proudly sponsors the 2nd grade Plains Indian Tipi experience
Learning inside the “movable classroom.” a full-size tipi is erected at our school gymnasium. Sessions take place inside the tipi so students can learn its role in the lifeways of Plains Indians, both in the past for housing and its ceremonial use today. Activities include:
● Introduction to tipi etiquette
● Craft activities, such as making pouches, shields, parfleches
● Round Dance or Snake Dance
● Children singing a traditional song
● Myths and traditional tales
● Playing the hand game
Additionally, the 4th grade gets to learn about the Eastern Woodlands: Native Peoples of Our Region. This program includes an introduction to the physical environment of our region prior to European contact and an understanding of how the Algonquian-speaking and Iroquoian-speaking Indians of the area developed ways to survive. Students learn, through group interactive projects, the role that cooperation plays in survival. Activities include:
● Construction of an outdoor wigwam
● Introduction to the environment from Native perspective
● Stone tool technology
● Craft activities, such as making Woodland style pottery and wampum
● Discussion of Native American medicines; children sample a tonic “tea”
● Traditional game
Our 5th graders will get an introduction to their ever changing bodies during our annual Maturation Program by Planned Parenthood of Nassau County. This parent/student workshop is designed to open up communication about a subject that can be uncomfortable to discuss.
The Brain Show
Welcome back to a student and teacher favorite - The Brain Show!
The Brain Show is the perfect vehicle to celebrate education and to communicate to children that learning can be cool and fun! The Brain Show makes for an engaging school assembly show because it presents an entertaining, yet educational platform to involve the students, as well as their teachers.
The Brain Show has the authentic look and feel of a real live TV game show complete with colorful podiums that feature computerized lights and sounds. The show can be adapted to meet the curriculum needs of your school. Educational questions, submitted by your teachers, can be incorporated into the game show to test your students on topics they have recently covered.
Bricks 4 Kidz® Workshop
A Bricks 4 Kidz® workshop uses LEGO® Bricks that kids love to deliver hands-on lessons correlated to cross-disciplinary curriculum objectives. The Bricks 4 Kidz approach to learning is imaginative, multi-sensory and fun, creating a dynamic learning experience for your students. Bricks 4 Kidz models are the centerpiece of the lesson, which includes an educator-scripted discussion designed to engage students in a discovery process. Our experienced teachers provide everything needed including LEGO® Bricks, model plans, power-point presentation and take-home summary sheets.
5th Grade Ballroom Dancing Program
The PTA in conjunction with P.S. 221Q help sponsor the 5th Grade Ballroom Dancing Program. Students broaden their perspective by working with professional artists and arts organizations representing diverse cultural and personal approaches to dance, and by seeing performances of widely varied dance
styles and genres. Active partnerships that combine school and local community resources with the full range of New York City’s dance and
cultural institutions create a fertile ground for students’ dance learning and creativity. (source -Blueprint for Teaching and Learning in Dance NYC DOE)

There is bubble blowing, submarine sinking, balloon popping and putty making during these sessions. It is a unique and memorable way to liven up a science lesson!
Multi-Cultural Day Fair
This is a parent-run event! Our wonderful PS 221 families give the students of our school the ability to learn about their own culture and other cultures while having a lot of fun.
